I always thought it was specific to my drive, but I hooked up a USB optical and got the same thing, leading me to look for a more general solution. In the Device Manager I've tried disabling it then enabling it again but I still get the device cannot start code 10. What now?

Here's how it works. Locate, and then click the following registry subkey:hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\control\class\{4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318}Caution: there can be many instances of the registry subkey that is mentioned in step 5. Why that is coming up with the DVD/CD-ROM I don't know. This Device Cannot Start. Camilla Reply Leave your comment Cancel reply Your email address will not be published. I uninstalled the driver and went back and made sure the upper filters were still deleted. And it still spins a disc and ejects so mechanically it seems OK. It worked!!!!

At least it said "DVD Drive" before I followed these steps. Assembly works 1 on 1 with ... I did a search and a program (can remembr the exact name) came up that said it would find it for me. Uninstalled the DVD ROM, rebooted, it was there again, still says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)".
